3 ways to reduce your risk of injury on a motorcycle

by | May 15, 2022 | Accident Injury

When isn’t the weather perfect for a motorcycle ride in Georgia? For many, cruising on a motorcycle feels like a form of freedom. Even so, those joyrides come with an increased risk of accidents. According to data from the Georgia Traffic Safety Facts, collisions with other vehicles account for 63% of all motorcycle accidents in Georgia.

Motorcycle accidents involving another vehicle can result in some serious injuries. Things like road rash, hearing loss or eye injuries pale in comparison to the traumatic brain injuries, neck and back injuries and internal bleeding that can occur when a rider is thrown from their bike.

Minimizing risk through wise action

Of course, wearing proper gear such as regulation grade helmet, thick pants and protective eyewear goes without saying when it comes to motorcyclist safety. However, there are two additional actions you can take while riding to reduce your risk of injury:

  • Know your surroundings. As you ride, be sure to continually scan the road ahead and the periphery for any potential hazards, stopped traffic and pedestrians or animals. You should also stay aware of possible exits in the event that you must immediately turn off of the road.
  • Avoid speeding. As your speed increases, so does your risk of severe injury in the event of an accident. Maintaining a reasonable speed also helps you adjust to sudden traffic pattern changes, as does keeping a safe distance behind the vehicles in front of you.

At the end of the day, you can take every precaution and still get into an accident due to someone elseʻs negligent driving. If you get into a motorcycle accident and become injured through no fault of your own, you deserve to know your rights. You may qualify for damages to help you pay for any necessary medical treatment or time off from work in addition to any motorcycle repairs that may be needed.
